Hi, I wanted to write a personal foreword before the introduction about myself. Each and every working day, we see patients whom are frustrated with hiding their crooked teeth and want to feel more confident on smiling, whom want to socialize more with friends and NOT hide their smile, who enjoy taking selfies and would like to feel comfortable when doing so. We see parents who would like the best for their kids, who would like their kids to feel confident when undertaking public speaking, singing or performing on stage. We meet office workers and professionals and tertiary students, whom would like to feel this confidence come through their smiles, when undertaking presentations and meetings. We see men and women, young and young at heart, whom would like to have that new smile for their one-time special event.
We also see all of those at the end of their orthodontic treatment on a weekly basis, the time when the braces or aligners are completed and they have achieved their new smile, and the sense of joy I see in their eyes and faces, it is a truly happy one. To me, this is one of the best feelings in the world. A time of celebration, and as a parent of 3 children myself, I feel proud and blessed to be in the company of all of you.

Hi, I am Maria and I am one of the Oral Health Therapists here at Smiles & Faces Orthodontics. I completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Oral Health at the University of Sydney allowing me to be a dual qualified dental hygienist and therapist.
As an Oral Health Therapist, you will see me work alongside Dr. Chang and the staff during your orthodontic treatment. I am involved in providing education on dental health, plaque control and nutrition and coaching you on how to look after your teeth, gums and orthodontic appliances. I take orthodontic records including photos and molds of your teeth, change wires and elastics, remove braces as well as fit retainers and appliances. I also perform teeth cleaning while ensuring that your time with us is a pleasant and comfortable experience.
I have always been interested in the health and well being of patients and thus prior to studying Oral Health, I completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Science in 2008 at the University of Sydney and have also been working as a dental assistant. I am a member of the Dental Hygienists’ Association of Australia and the Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapists’ Association.
In my free time, I like to go on food trips, watch movies and do arts and crafts. I enjoy travelling back to Philippines and spending time with my family and relatives. Since I grew up there, I am also fluent in Tagalog
I thought I’d share this with you as well. I remember back when I was 10 years old, I was told by a dentist not to enter this profession as most people will dislike you for what you do and so who would have thought what I got myself into! But after seeing patients and their families’ with smiles on their faces as they walk out the door, knowing that you have made a difference, I know I made the right decision because this is what I love to do and witness. So I look forward to helping you in your journey in achieving that healthy and beautiful smile, together with Dr. Chang and the rest of the friendly staff here at Smiles and Faces Orthodontics.
Here, I talk about the role of Oral Health Specialists in your orthodontic care.
